Goal Setting
It is time to be honest with you. I don’t remember any of my goals last year. Well, maybe one: get this baby out of me. Last January was a rough one for me. With my fifth (and hardest emotionally and physically) pregnancy and my dad in the hospital battling leukemia, I was tired. I had little energy to dream about the future. I just wanted to get through each day and keep my kids fed and clothed (which wasn’t as easy as it sounds).
Unfortunately this isn’t the first time I have set goals and had them fall by the wayside. Even without those goals, 2016 turned out to be amazing. That baby did come at the end of January, right on her due date. My dad conquered cancer. I grew as a person and as a business, so it was a great year. I also have learned one very important lesson:
God’s dreams for me are bigger and better than my own.
All this time, I have been making MY goals with little regard to HIS goals for me. MY goals are usually about the numbers: how many followers or how much money I make. HIS goals are focused around who I am becoming and who I am helping. This realization has me changing my outlook on New Year’s resolutions. I’ve decided to focus on that: becoming.
So, my word this year is
STRONGER
I want my testimony, my devotion, my relationship with the Savior, my love for my family, my ability to help others, all of it to become stronger.
That seems like a big task, I know. But, I also know that “by small and simple things are great things brought to pass.” So, I’m starting with some habits and some specifics.
Elder Oakes said, “The gospel of Jesus Christ is the plan by which we can become what children of God are supposed to become. This spotless and perfected state will result from a steady succession of covenants, ordinances, and actions, an accumulation of right choices, and from continuing repentance. “This life is the time for men to prepare to meet God” (Alma 34:32).”
Here is this year’s list of habits that I want to make a part of my life. They might seem simple, but once I have adequately made these a habit, I will add more throughout the year.
- Stronger relationship with Christ. Habits: kneel to pray each morning and night and keep a notebook by my bed to write down when He speaks to my heart
- Stronger relationship with my family. Habits: Put phone away during kid time and think kind thoughts about my family
- Stronger ability to share the Gospel. Habits: write each morning and read a good book at night
- Stronger Spirit in my home. Habit: pick up living room and leave no dishes in the sink before bed and make bed in the morning
- Stronger body able to serve more. Habits: drink water and walk more
- Stronger business. Habits: help someone online every day and openly share my business journey
I know what you’re thinking, those are a little to easy and they don’t follow the must have for goals because they aren’t specific or time sensitive. But, my goal is to BECOME something better. Armed with these new habits, I’m sure to do it.
