What to do if your business isn’t feeling inspired.
Each of our guests on our podcast have been amazing, but I fear that you may listen to them and feel a little bit discouraged that you aren’t receiving the same kind of revelation that they are. The thing is, each of these women is telling their story and a story has a beginning, middle and an end. My sister always says, “It will all be okay in the end and if it’s not okay, then it’s not the end.” So, if you are feeling like you aren’t getting the same kind of revelation that these women are getting, it is probably because you are in the “messy middle” and it is harder to recognize the revelation that you are getting. Well, here are three quick questions to ask to get you feeling inspired again.
1. Am I making it to receive revelation?
Sarah is going to talk all about this in tomorrow’s blog post.
2. How does God speak to me?
God speaks to us in our minds and in our hearts. To me that means, the Lord knows just how to speak to us so that we will understand. There are many ways to receive his inspiration. My dad is a very logical thinker. He says that he receives revelation only after he has made a choice and taken a step toward it. The Spirit will tell him if something is wrong. I receive revelation when reading the scriptures. Once you figure out how the Spirit speaks to you, then you will be able to more easily recognize his voice.
Think back on a time when you have received inspiration. What were you doing? How did you feel? How did the Holy Ghost speak to you? Make a note of this and when you need answers you will be more aware of how and what to do. So, if you get answers in the scriptures like I do, when you need to make an important decision for your business, spend extra time in the scriptures. If you receive revelation only after you have made a decision, then make a decision and then go to the Lord asking direction.
3. Is the Lord Speaking and I’m not listening?
For more than a year, I have been pushing to create a course. I did my research and found a topic that I thought the industry needed and that I was more than qualified to teach about. From the very beginning of this course, I felt like I shouldn’t do it, but logically it made sense to pursue. So, I pushed ahead. Every step was laborious. I continued to feel like I shouldn’t do it, but because I had already outlined, scripted and even created some videos, I forged ahead. Then, two weeks ago, I hit a breaking point. I was doing too much and I had to put something down. The course came to mind and I talked to Sarah about it. She told me that, although I was qualified to teach the topic, it wasn’t really where she thought I should be spending my time. Once she gave voice to my feelings, I was able to admit to the feelings that I had had all along. The Lord had been speaking to me the whole time, but I chose not to listen and wasted hours of time and energy trying to make it happen.
The more we listen to the Lord, the more he trusts us with his messages. Pres. Eyring gave a talk about writing in his journal each day about how he had seen the Lord’s hand in his life. He says:
“As I kept at it, something began to happen. As I would cast my mind over the day, I would see evidence of what God had done for one of us that I had not recognized in the busy moments of the day. As that happened, and it happened often, I realized that trying to remember had allowed God to show me what He had done.”
When we document the miracles in our lives, God will open our minds to see all that he has done for us. To do this, I have been using the Day One journaling app. It has made it very easy for me to write in my journal daily while adding pictures and tags to my text.
Elder Scott said, “Our Heavenly Father did not put us on the earth to fail but to succeed gloriously.” God will inspire us in our lives as moms AND as business owners.
